    The 3100 Kv motor is a custom designed and crafted motor made to optimize the efficiency of light-weight batteries. That means longer flights and less power loss from overheating. This motor turns the prop over 22,000 rpm at only 30 amps in static testing. Unloaded in flight the RPM increases 20% and the current drops 20%. We have tested higher Kv motors like 3600 and 4000 Kv, and found them to be power hungry (45 to 60 amps) with small RPM gains.

    The recommended set up is direct drive with a 5 X 5 prop and a 35 to 40 amp ESC using a maximum of 3 LiPo cells.

    The operating RPM range of this motor is 22,000 to 42,000. The prop should be balanced to achieve maximum efficiency and avoid bearing wear.

    The HP (hard point) flying wing motor mount system integrates a laser cut 1/8″ plywood motor mount laminated inside in the styrene motor tray. This mount system is stable and strong. The HP Tray will accommodate an inrunner motor or a front mounted outrunner motor, up to 30mm diameter. The HP mount has three different pre-measured hole patterns for most motors including the standard Zagi 3100 Kv inrunner.

The test was performed in level flight, on the same Zagi, on the same day, in the same conditions just minutes apart. The pilot was not told which prop was on the Zagi and was not told the radar results. The Zagi was landed and a NASCAR style prop and battery change were done. The procedure was repeated three times. The Zagi carbon prop tested 10 to 15 MPH faster than the other four. Since the test was not done to find the best performance in a tractor configuration the only conclusion for the performance difference is that the spoon shaped prop works better in the pusher configuration. The performance difference is perhaps that the wider spoon shape works better in dirty (turbulated) air.

    The 48 inch Zagi THL flying wing is made of resilient expanded polypropylene (EPP) foam and reinforced with carbon fiber spars. The Zagi THL has a high lift, low drag profile. Flying weight is only 14 ounces providing a loading of only 4.1 oz/ft2 including receiver and 1600 mAh battery pack.

    The Zagi THL flies well in light slope lift or small hills. The testing for this model was done on a 30 foot berm at the beach in Southern California. The Zagi THL flying wing will fly at about 5 MPH and penetrates in winds to 15 MPH. The design objectives were to make a rugged, low cost, light weight wing for light slope lift, thermal and hand launch applications.

The new system integrates a laser cut 1/8″ plywood motor mount laminated inside in the styrene motor tray.
